Signs your parent may need help at home
September 24, 2026 · PureHeart Home Care
Most parents don't announce that they need help. More often, the signs show up quietly, in the house, the fridge or the way a phone call sounds. Noticing them early gives your family time to plan instead of reacting to a crisis.
Around the house
Mail, bills or dishes are piling up.
The house is less tidy than it used to be, or there are new clutter hazards on the floor.
Laundry isn't getting done, or the same clothes are being worn again and again.
In the kitchen
There's expired or spoiled food in the fridge.
There's very little fresh food, or meals seem to be skipped.
They've lost weight without trying.
Personal care
They seem less put-together than usual.
Bathing has become hard, or they avoid the shower because they're afraid of slipping.
Getting around
They hold onto furniture or walls to move around.
There have been falls, near-falls or new bruises they can't explain.
They've stopped going out, driving or seeing friends.
Mood and memory
They're more withdrawn, lonely or low.
They repeat questions, miss appointments or seem confused about medications.
Some of these changes can have medical causes, so it's always worth mentioning them to their doctor.
How to start the conversation
Choose a calm moment and lead with what you've noticed, not with a plan. Something like "I've noticed the stairs seem harder lately. How are you finding them?" goes further than "You need help." Ask what they'd find useful. Many parents are more open to help when it keeps them independent in their own home.
A little help can go a long way
Home care doesn't have to mean all-day care. A caregiver who helps with showers, meals and housekeeping a few times a week can make home safer and give the whole family peace of mind.
